Ah nice one, we actually just bought a physical Chromebook so we can improve the Supernotes experience on there for you and others While only a few Supernotes members are on Chrome OS, we want everyone to have the best experience possible
That’s great! My biggest issue is that I can’t install the linux app on my Chromebook. I know the theory - install appimagelauncher, etc. I just can’t get it working. I wonder if you could have a go - I’d be interested to see how you get on.
Hi @dmsharpe, I’ve been looking at it this morning. I’ve split this out into a separate topic to make it easier to find and consolidate in the future. As a little recap for everyone else, currently there’s three ways you can install Supernotes on your Chrome OS device:
- Installable Progressive Web App (PWA) – this is the best way to experience Supernotes on your Chrome device. Just go to https://my.supernotes.app/ and log in. Then press the prompt to install Supernotes as a web app from the Chrome toolbar. The only drawback with this method is that refreshing while offline is not supported and will cause the app to ask you to go back online before you can take more notes.
- Google Play Store – this installs the mobile / tablet optimised version of Supernotes that’s intended for Android. Unfortunately it’s not possible to log in via this method currently as Chrome OS does not support app links like
supernotes://
which we use for authenticating the app via your web browser. It’s also not an ideal method as this version of Supernotes is best on touch screen devices. - Install Supernotes for Linux – this requires you to enable the Linux developer environment on your Chromebook. This is not ideal as it’s running inside a virtual machine inside of Chrome OS. And using the command line to set things up is not very user friendly at all – while this works for Linux users who are used to this, it’s not great for Chrome OS users who are looking for a simple one-click install.
Our current thinking is to prioritise improving the PWA support for Supernotes, so it works better offline. As that’s a one click install and seems to have the best performance – Supernotes works incredibly well using this method on a budget $200 Chromebook.
I’ll update our progress here, and if you have any further questions feel free to leave them below
I appreciate your work on this, thank you.
I agree that the best way to use Supernotes on a Chromebook is via the PWA, and I would also agree that its offline functionality should be improved. It can be used offline if the app was already opened - but if the app is opened afresh while offline, it won’t load.
