Streamlining Note Splitting and Hierarchy Creation in Supernotes

Hello everyone,

I have a question about my workflow with Supernotes. I frequently generate notes that aren’t yet organized hierarchically. When a note exceeds the soft character limit by 150%, I realize it needs to be split. I then select a logical point to cut and paste the content into a new note, making it either a child or sibling of the current note. Additionally, I create a new parent to house both the current note and its sibling (or child).

How do you handle this situation?

Currently, my process involves many clicks, disrupting my writing flow:

  1. Close the current note, open it in the noteboard, create a child, and paste.
  2. Close the current note, create a new parent, open it in the noteboard, create a sibling, open the original note, assign the new parent, reopen the parent, place it in the noteboard, and continue writing a third note.
  3. Close the current note, create a second note in home, then a third. When concepts start to escape, I stop and create a parent for all of them.

If I’m not in the home view but within the tree, I also need to adjust parent connections, adding more steps.

These numerous clicks interrupt my writing flow. Does anyone have a more streamlined approach?

Additionally, I noticed a “similarity” popup suggesting related forum topics before posting. This inspired a new idea: if a similar feature were integrated into the note-taking interface, suggested notes could offer options like “link,” “make parent,” or “make child.” This could streamline structuring to just one click.

I’ve noticed tonight that siblings can be “created” straight from the link coupler, that’s very self-consistent and intuitive. For some reason, I had not noticed it before :person_facepalming:t2:

Hi @salb99,

We added a new Move Coupler recently to help you quickly split up overflowing paragraphs into new cards. Just select text and then press / to open the Universal Coupler, then select “Move”. I hope that helps!

@Tobias, thanks! Rarely have I met such responsive and transparent developers. You go beyond by anticipating needs. Great job! :tada:

Here’s a summary[1] from my side:

Command[2] Text Behavior Focus Hierarchy
Link (+new) Selected text fills new card’s title; original text links to new card New card Siblings or step-siblings
Move Selected text moves to new card’s body; defaults no title, but can be added straight from the search box Original card Siblings or step-siblings

Everything works elegantly and solves what I was looking for! One small rough edge remains in the link menu—the difficulty of dealing with untitled cards. Perhaps a temporary “Recent Cards” section at the top of the card selector could solve this. It prevents disruption in the main list logic and keeps everything intuitive and efficient—a lifesaver (or flow-saver) for creative writing.

@tobias This thread is currently “solved” but it’s got really good context for what I’d like as a Feature Requests lt.com. I very often am wanting to create a new note as a CHILD of the note i’m editing, as opposed to as a SIBLING note.

When I want it to be a child note, I have several steps to do after the note is created:

  1. find the note that was just created in the currently open Noteboard
  2. click edit button
  3. remove the existing noteboard note as Parent
  4. add parent of the original note i was editing

This also requires me to keep in memory the Title of the original note I was editing, which is sometimes difficult, depending on how long the note is - the Title isn’t visible a lot of the time while editing a note.

To solve this, I did a little markup. I think either two buttons, or more options on press and hold could work well

It would also be very beneficial to having a “Add Child” Coupler option, like so:

I agree, note splitting, joining and moving as it is today is not smooth and breaks my flow state consistently. Navigation to/from backlinks and frontlinks also remains a big challenge
