AI Chat with Notes

One of the most interesting uses of AI is the ability to talk with my notes. Mem has this, Notion has it, Reflect has a cool implementation of it. I would love this in Supernotes. I love being able to create a lot of notes and then have an AI synthesize it for me or gather unique thoughts and ideas from it. Not sure how practical that is, but I know if y’all made it, it would look awesome.

I am very interested in this feature as well. I hesitated to ask because I’ve seen implementations ranging from excellent to detrimental, to the point where I almost consider it like gambling. Perhaps I would initially evaluate whether the AI collections could be adjusted to aid in the purpose.

If this feature is implemented, as it might incur higher computing costs, I hope the subscription fee for existing features won’t increase (separated billing for this feature), and users can opt out of this while still using the existing superpowers.

@wldh brings up a good point.

Obviously, I don’t speak for everyone, but this is a feature I have yet to use. I’ve tried it a few times, but it just never resonated with me.

Maybe it could be a small upgraded cost for those that do want it, if that were the case? I know that Two’s uses an AI but keeps the model very small, I just don’t remember how they did that.

Thanks all for contributing to discussion here. We’ve been taking it all on board, and thanks for the kind words @Iamjmw

While yes I’m sure we could add a chat interface within Supernotes and would be fun to build; this sadly currently doesn’t align with our vision for AI within Supernotes and isn’t the best use of our time. If you haven’t already you should definitely read @connor’s article on AI and our direction on our blog.

As mentioned a lot of apps have added an AI Chat interface within apps, our focus is not to spend months adding another one of these. Instead we’d rather integrate more tightly with tools like Raycast and build an even better, easier API so you can just plug Supernotes data into your favourite Chat app. Just like you did with ChatGPT actions.

Or even possibly integrate at the OS level, such as with Apple Intelligence. Like we posted on Threads recently – we never spent time building a fancy writing tools interface, but our existing interface works seamless with the new AI-enabled native iOS writing tools.

Simplicity is the key to Supernotes, and we aim to avoid having different plans / confusing add-ons but just have one simple Unlimited upgrade. Our new updated pricing page reflects this as well. We’ve kept our prices the same over the last 4 years even with the inclusion of AI, rising service costs and huge milestones in functionality. While we have recently announced the (possibility) of a price increase – we are trying to avoid that as long as possible (or even altogether) so we can keep Supernotes affordable for everyone.

@Iamjmw I’d Be curious to know more about the chatGPT integration you mentioned in your twitter post.

I’m coming around to @tobias’s way of viewing this. I’ve used all the AI powered apps and they’re all unfulfilling. Maybe the best has been NotebookLM but that also has the worst note taking experience.

Maybe the answer will be connecting AI to something like Supernotes. There’s already such an easy way to export to Markdown that I can just do that and upload it to Claude and have a conversation with those notes. Not as elegant as it all being connected directly though.

I wonder if there’s the ability to use something like Pipedream to make that seamless and require less manual work.

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

I have read the post and I like it. But the problem I have is that the views of AI being put forth in the article seem to suggest that AI is strictly being used to do work for us and that there is no other creative way that AI is being used. It completely ignores all the amazing ways AI can actually help us think better.

What AI can do now and what the power users of AI are using it for won’t cause atrophy, it actually allows us to flex our cognitive muscles in new ways. For instance, I love using Dot. It’s just a long text chat with an AI bot (made by former Apple Design employees) and it has memory. So I can ask it something like, “Based on what you know about me, what are some of my fears? Give a description.” It gave me an insanely personal and spot on response that has helped me out tremendously over the last month.

In note-taking, I can say something like, “Based on the last week, what are some common themes you can see with my notes I’ve taken?” Or, “Look at this note and give me a totally different perspective that is opposite of my view.” Or, “Can you explain this concept to me in a simpler way?”

But the reason the smart kid in high school earned great grades isn’t because she had good notes to study from. She got great grades because she is the one who made the notes.

This is true, but that same person also knows how to ask the teacher great questions that give them a greater understanding of the material. LLMs are the teacher and by asking the right question, we can formulate a better understanding of different topics and then record them in our notes.

If your main view of LLMs is that they “hamstring your own learning process” and “do the hard work for you”, then I think y’all definitely need to go out and see how smart thinkers are using AI to learn more. I was reading about Schrödinger’s interpretation of humans as dissipative structures and couldn’t wrap my mind around it until I had Claude explain it to me better. Now I fully understand it and can write better notes on it.

I’m not saying y’all need to pop a chatbot into SuperNote or anything like that. But come up with a unique way to integrate it in your own way. I use AI every day and I am way more knowledgeable on more topics now than ever.

I love this app whether it adds more AI or not. I’m way more interested in practical feature upgrades. But I’m not gonna lie, it would be super dope to have a search similar to Reflects in SuperNote. I much prefer using SN.

Sorry for the rant! I had some free time at work and was just perusing the community here and wanted to add my thoughts. Keep up the awesome work!
