What is the future of Supernotes?

Hi, have been holding off asking this, kinda hoping someone else would.

I am aware both Connor and Tobias have headed to America for new jobs (congrats!). What does this mean for Supernotes on going development?

Also, one of the big appeals was this is a UK Based company, is that still the case and if so how do you work the ergonomics of the infrastructure being in the Uk and both the companies devs being in America?

Interesting! I had no idea this was the case. Has this been made public?

Within the next 6 months or so I’ll know what my plans are for a note taking app and potentially a task app. I’m considering SuperNotes strongly and maybe even going for the 4 year option and would hope the app lasts more than the 4 years! :joy:

This question of ā€˜how long will Supernotes be around’ is one that we hear almost every year, regardless of our personal circumstances (and thanks for the kind words William). The simple answer is always the same, Connor and I own Supernotes, we use Supernotes every day, we love building it. Because of that it’s a lot more likely to stick around than other alternatives that are pushing for exits or depending on a large team. Supernotes is sustainable. We’ve now been operational as company for 8 years, and are looking forward to many more years to come!

Ergonomics are super easy – since we’re a software product. Our customer support is as responsive as ever. Supernotes continues to be a UK company, all our servers / data is hosted in the UK / EU. And it’s going to stay that way as it’s important to us (I’m British) and you, our community.

Now onto the other burning question, what does that mean for Supernotes development? Of course it’s continuing, we have already been testing localisation, file uploads and more in development. We’re just careful to add more features. Since 3.0 release, Supernotes is a very mature notes app with an abundance of functionality. So we’ve been prioritising quality over speed – with so much AI slop these days we’re keeping Supernotes intentional and manual. That’s our differentiator.

This is news to me and very surprising at that :thinking: Given how slow SN is to release features already, wouldn’t the news of 2 founders joining another company mean we can expect a much slower release cadence?

You happen to mention Things 3 in your blog post, but I’d like to point out that I paid for Things 3 60$ once, 5 years ago and never again. So if they did the bare minimum fixes and patches to maintain it (which is what they mostly do) it would meet my expectations. The model and iteration speed expectation is very different for a product that one pays a subscription for.

It is important to remember that a Supernotes subscription is selling a service as it exists today for the service provided. It is not selling our time or the promise of features in the future. We have always tried to make it clear that there is no guarantee of what features might be added or when, which is why we have never had (nor plan to have) a public-facing roadmap.

This is also the exact reason we stopped selling a Lifetime subscription a few years ago – we felt that a ā€œlifetimeā€ subscription promises something we cannot guarantee effectively, as it implied a certainty about the future of the company and future cashflow that is never certain. But we do feel confident in guaranteeing that as long as you have an active subscription, we can keep providing you the service. A one time fee does not make sense, as a key proposition of Supernotes is that we make your cards accessible on all your devices (and via API) and provide additional variable-cost features (such as AI and file storage) as part of your subscription.

Hope that makes sense. As Tobias said, we have plan to release new features this quarter, including some I think many of you will be quite happy about. But as always we will take our time and not release features if we do not feel they are ready.

When I saw that Tobias had started a new job in America, I was briefly concerned about the future of Supernotes.

BUT ..

On January 21, I received my third anniversary badge and was really happy about it. Tobias and Connor always make it clear to me how much Supernotes and the community mean to them, and I will be there for as long as possible.

Supernotes has enriched my everyday life in an incredible way, and I love its simplicity and the possibilities it offers. I don’t know of any other app where the connection to the developers is so accessible and where problems are dealt with immediately when they arise.

To be clear, I wasn’t suggesting a one time fee model for SN.

What I meant was that personally, when I pay a subscription I have expectations of product evolving and improving over time, that’s just the standard that the software industry has set out. I don’t expect that from Things 3 because it was a one time payment. For the most part the two feel at odds to me, at least at the current price points that I see. I don’t see how a team of two can meaningfully move the product forward at a pace that is reasonable, with a whole other full-time commitment. I feel really silly now having purchased a 4 year subscription, because this looks kind of bleak from my point of view.
